Baseball Before We Knew It by David Block
This early image of baseball with its odd-shaped bat comes from The Young Florist, 1833.
This scene of boys playing baseball on the Boston Common appeared first in The Book of Sports, 1834, and in several books afterward.
This engraving first appeared in Mary's Book of Sports, 1832, and subsequently made its way into numerous other children's chapbooks. This copy was taken from Sports of Youth, 1835.
Reading lesson from McGuffey's Newly Revised Eclectic First Reader, 1844. The text also seems to encourage positive thinking for batters.
